Tyson, Edward (1650–1708), British anatomist. A pioneer in comparative anatomy, Tyson laid down a set of principles and methodology that influenced the field of comparative anatomy for many years after his death. He produced classic anatomical descriptions of such diverse animals as the dolphin, rattlesnake, opossum, shark embryo, and the tapeworm. In 1694 William Cowper published an anatomical work in which he included a description of the glands of the external male genitalia that had been discovered by Tyson and now bear his name.
